The Brizen Youth Club – “LITTER PICK” - Good Friday, 2nd April 2010
And now for something completely different……
The Brizen recreation field that surrounds The Brizen Young Peoples Centre was beginning to look a little untidy and so The Chair of Leckhampton With Warden Hill Parish Council - Paul Ryder & Karen Smith, Project Youth Leader of Gloucestershire Youth Service got together and organised a “Litter Pick” of the “whole field” on Good Friday.
The litter pick also qualified for special ”STARS” :
GYS is currently running a ”STARS” scheme for the young people on an individual basis – each time they earn a “STAR” it is added to their sheet and they can then exchange “STARS” for trips into the countryside, to a theme park, sea fishing trips or other healthy activities.
In atrocious weather conditions - it tipped down with rain all of the time that they were working, 6 young persons and one “not so young person” set about cleaning up ALL of the litter on the site. Using equipment supplied, on loan, from Cheltenham Borough Council Green Open Spaces Department (special thanks to John Rees).
Supervised by Karen & Paul, and with assistance by Committee Member John Heasman, the 7 intrepid “Pickers” (including Committee Member Allan Knight) cleared up a scrap mini-scooter, shopping baskets and over 10 black sacks of waste paper, crisp packets, drinks cartons and bottles/cans. It took them just 2 hours to clean up the area which is used by local residents and dog walkers.
Lots of “STARS” were earned and each young person was given an Easter egg as a token of appreciation for their hard work for the community of Leckhampton With Warden Hill Parish (even the not so young person had one as well!).
