Grand Opening of The Brizen Young People's Centre, 3rd October 2009Following the completiom of the building programme in just over 20 weeks, The Brizen Young People's Centre was formally opened with great celebration on Saturday, 3rd October. Some 200 guests and visitors were present at the Opening of the Centre on the Brizen Recreation Field and enjoyed an afternoon of varied entertainment. The official Opening Ceremony was carried out by the Chairman of Leckhampton with Warden Hill Parish Council, Cllr Paul Ryder, together with the Deputy Mayor of Cheltenham, Cllr Anne Regan, the Assistant Curate of St. Peter's Church, Leckhampton, the Reverend Anne Dowdeswell, and two of the Brizen Young People, Rhiannon Tyler and Greg Kingsley.

Some 200 guests attended the event and witnessed the Opening Cermony carried out by the official opening party.
Following the official opening, the Centre was then available for viewing and use by all the visitors. The Centre is equipped with a table tennis table and pool table, comfortable sofas, and will shortly be further equipped with a widescreen TV together with a Wii games console, and an Ipod - a truly well-equipped drop-in youth centre for young people in the south Cheltenham area.

Some of the visitors enjoy the facilities in the hallDuring the course of the afternoon of the Grand Opening, the visitors were entertained by the superb JB Jazz and Blues Band whilst enjoying refreshments in the marquee.

Throughout the afternoon, our redoubtable Master of Ceremonies (Allan Knight) encouraged guests and visitors to enjoy some lovely Irish dancing demonstration by young ladies of the Felton-McCarthy Irish Dancing School, whilst Leckhampton Martial Arts Group (for young people) displayed their organisation, and Cheltenham Borough Council Homes demonstrated their crafts for young people. All this was backed up by the Up Hatherley Youth Council who were promoting their newly formed organisation, the St. John's Ambulance Cadets who turned out in force, together with Leckhampton Police who brought along their information van and were advising young people (as well as helping immensely with the organisation of the event) throughout the day.
All in all, guests and vistors enjoyed a wonderful afternoon and were able to witness for themselves the superb new facility that has been provided for young people in the south Cheltenham area.
The Brizen Young People's Centre is now open, and the Gloucestershire Youth Service run youth evenings, led by Karen Smith, on every Monday and Wednesday (from 6.15pm to 8.45pm). All young people in the 13 - 19 year age group are very welcome to attend.
Outside of youth activity hours, The Brizen Young People's Centre, with hall (34 x 18 feet), kitchen, and disabled toilet facilities, is available to hire for just £12 per hour. It is an attractive venue suitable for business seminars, dance groups, martial arts groups, toddler groups, formal meetings, birthday parties for young children (up to age 12 years) etc. If you are interested, please visit our Bookings page for further details. AUTUMN FAIR: TABLE TOP & CAR BOOT SALE, SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 2009 |
Our third Autumn Fair was jointly run with In Bloom for Warden Hill. Twenty two tables were booked including many by small businesses, and the old favourites of Tombola and Raffle were also very successful. Kathy Coppings Catering sold out on the day, with breakfasts, lunch and take-away meals. Our local woodsman, Councillor Paul Ryder, constructed and sold out of Bugs' Boxes. The car park was almost full with traders who welcomed the dry day for trading. Some of the local Salisbury Avenue shops reported improved takings on the day - a nice bonus for the local community. In all some £500 was raised on the day!
